How early should you leave for O'Hare? The simple rule is to be at the airport at least 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight. Then add your drive time and a cushion for Chicago traffic. This guide explains why O'Hare needs that much time, how to check the security line before you go, and when to leave from your part of Chicagoland.
The short answer
| Your flight | Be at O'Hare | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic, normal day | 2 hours before | Check-in, bag drop, security and the walk to your gate. |
| Domestic, early morning or holiday | 2.5 hours before | Security lines build fast at O'Hare's busiest times. |
| International | 3 hours before | Longer check-in, document checks and security. |
These times are for when you arrive at the terminal. Your drive comes on top of that. We cover drive times by area further down.
Why O'Hare needs extra time
O'Hare is one of the busiest airports in the world, and it keeps getting busier.
- The busiest airfield in the country. Federal Aviation Administration data shows O'Hare handled 857,392 takeoffs and landings in 2025, more than any other US airport.
- Record crowds at security. TSA screened 117,871 people at O'Hare on August 4, 2025. That was the most ever in one day. It was the Monday after Lollapalooza.
- Big terminals. Gates can be a long walk from security. Terminal 5, where most international flights leave, is its own building.
- Check-in lines too. If you are checking a bag, you may wait in line twice: once to drop the bag and once for security.
How long is the security line at O'Hare?
It changes all the time. On a quiet afternoon, you might get through TSA in 20 or 30 minutes. On a busy morning or a holiday, the line can take more than an hour. On the worst days, check-in and security together can take an hour and a half to two hours.
That is why we always plan for the busy version of the day, not the quiet one. Arriving early and waiting at the gate is a lot better than watching the line and checking the clock.
Check the line before you leave
You can get a good idea of the wait before you head out:
- The MyTSA app. It is free from the TSA on iPhone and Android. It shows security wait times posted by other travelers at the airport, and how busy the airport usually is on your day and time. It also has a "Can I Bring?" search for items, airport delays and weather, and TSA PreCheck details.
- Your airline's app. Some airline apps, like United's, show security wait times at big hub airports.
- Check again on the way. Wait times posted by travelers are estimates, and lines can grow quickly. Take a look again when you are about 30 minutes out.
A short line on the app is a nice surprise, not a plan. Leave on time either way.
Know your airline's cutoff times
Being in the terminal is not enough. Airlines have hard deadlines.
- Check-in and bag drop. At the big US airlines, the cutoff is generally 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights and 60 minutes for international flights. Miss it, and the airline can refuse your bag or give away your seat.
- The gate. Boarding doors can close about 15 minutes before departure.
- Check your airline. Rules differ by airline and by route. Look up yours when you book.
Chicago traffic is part of the plan
The drive to O'Hare can take much longer than your map app says the night before.
- The worst traffic in the country. The INRIX 2025 Global Traffic Scorecard ranked Chicago as the most congested city in the US. Drivers here lost 112 hours to traffic in 2025, and rush-hour speeds averaged about 21 miles per hour.
- Constant construction. Road work is part of life on Chicago expressways. The Kennedy, the main route from downtown to O'Hare, went through a three-year rebuild from 2023 to 2025. Lane closures pop up every season.
- The airport is being built too. O'Hare is in the middle of a long expansion, including a new Concourse D planned for late 2028. Work zones can change traffic near the terminals.
- Weather. Snow, ice and summer storms can slow every road to the airport. See our guide to O'Hare rides in bad weather.
When to leave for O'Hare from your area
Here are our suggested pickup times before a domestic flight. They include the airport buffer, the drive and a traffic cushion. Add 30 to 45 minutes for international flights, weekday rush hours or winter weather.
| Where you start | Drive to O'Hare | Pickup before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Rosemont | 10 to 20 min | 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Schaumburg, Arlington Heights | 20 to 35 min | 3 hours |
| Oak Park, Elmhurst, Evanston | 20 to 50 min | 3 to 3.5 hours |
| Downtown Chicago and the Loop | 30 to 55 min | 3.5 hours |
| Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Downers Grove | 25 to 45 min | 3 to 3.5 hours |
| Highland Park, Lake Forest | 35 to 55 min | 3.5 to 4 hours |
| Naperville, Wheaton | 35 to 55 min | 3.5 to 4 hours |
| Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Lawn | 40 to 65 min | 3.5 to 4 hours |
| Aurora | 45 to 65 min | 4 hours |
| Lake Bluff, Waukegan, Gurnee | 45 to 75 min | 4 to 4.5 hours |
Example: You live in Naperville and have a 9:00 am domestic flight. Plan on a pickup around 5:00 to 5:30 am. On a snowy Monday, make it closer to 4:30 am.
These are guidelines. When you book with us, we set an exact pickup time for your address, terminal and flight. See our O'Hare drop-off page for more.

Times that need extra cushion
- Early mornings. Big waves of flights leave early in the day, and security lines build quickly.
- Holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break bring the biggest crowds. See our O'Hare holiday travel guide.
- Weekday rush hours. Morning and evening traffic can double your drive time.
- Big events. Festivals, conventions and games fill the airport. O'Hare's busiest TSA day ever came right after Lollapalooza.
- Winter weather. Snow slows the roads and can add de-icing time before takeoff.
How we get you there early
As a car service, being early is our job. Here is how we handle it:
- We set your pickup time. We look at your address, terminal, flight time and the day's traffic, then tell you exactly when we will be there.
- Your chauffeur arrives a few minutes early. Bags go in the car, and you go.
- We watch traffic on the way. Your chauffeur follows live traffic and adjusts the route.
- We drop you at the right door. You get out at the upper-level departures curb of your airline's terminal, close to check-in and security.
- The price does not change. Every ride is a flat rate, locked when you book, with no surge for rush hour or weather.
Before you leave for the airport
- Check in online the day before, if your airline allows it.
- Open the MyTSA app to see the current wait at O'Hare.
- Check your flight status in your airline's app.
- Know your terminal. Terminal 5 is for most international flights.
- Have your ID ready. A REAL ID or a passport.
- Know your cutoff. Usually 45 minutes before a domestic flight and 60 before international.
The takeaway
When you are deciding how early to leave for O'Hare, plan for a busy day. Aim to be at the terminal 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. Add your drive and a cushion for traffic, construction and weather. Check the MyTSA app before you go. If the line is short, you get extra time to relax at the gate.
