O'Hare to Naperville is one of the longer suburb routes we cover. We drive it a lot, it's about 28 miles away, and the time it takes can change by half an hour or more depending on when you land.
Here is what we've learned: the roads we should take, how long it really takes, the usual Chicago road work to know about in 2026, and how to make the ride as easy as possible for our guests.
| Trip | Details |
|---|---|
| Distance | About 28 miles |
| Drive time | 40 to 70 minutes |
| Route | I-190, I-294 south, then I-88 west |
| Sedan fare | From $115, tolls, fees, and gratuity included |
The Route We Take
From O'Hare, we take I-190 out of the airport, then the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) south, then the Reagan Tollway (I-88) west into Naperville.
- I-190 out of the airport to I-294
- I-294 south past Rosemont and Elmhurst
- I-88 west through Oak Brook, Downers Grove and Lisle
- Exit here at Naperville Road, Winfield Road, or Route 59, depending on the address
For homes in south Naperville, I-355 can be faster. Your chauffeur will always check traffic before you leave the airport and pick the faster route.
How Long It Really Takes
The drive is 40 to 70 minutes purely depending on time of day and traffic. When you land makes most of the difference.
- Late night and early morning: about 40 minutes
- Midday: about 45 to 55 minutes
- Weekday rush hour (3:00 PM to 7:00 PM): 60 to 70 minutes, sometimes more
- Friday afternoons and holiday weekends: the slowest times of the week
If you land around 4:00 PM on a weekday, plan to get home closer to dinner time than you think.
The Two Slow Spots
Two places slow this trip down more than anything else.
- The Hillside area: This is where I-294, I-290 and I-88 all come together. Traffic backs up here on most afternoons.
- The I-88 and I-294 interchange in Oak Brook: The Illinois Tollway is rebuilding it right now, with lane shifts and ramp changes.
Road Work on This Route in 2026
The Tri-State is in the second-to-last year of its big rebuild. Work in 2026 is ongoing I-88 and I-290 all the way up to North Avenue, right on the way to Naperville.
- The I-294 bridges over I-88, Butterfield Road, and I-290 are being rebuilt
- The ramp from southbound I-294 to westbound I-88 is part of the work too
- The Tollway says both projects should finish in 2027
We drive this route every week several times, so we know where the lane shifts are and plan pickup times around them.
